Research and Planning: 'The Vow' Poster Analysis

Genre

Straight off the audience can see that this film is of the Romance genre. The main focus of the poster, being the central image, which is a medium shot of a couple in very tight framing, being that they are pressed up against eachother. With them being this close and looking at eachother in a loving way, the audience can see that they are attracted to eachother and that the film will most likely be based off their relationship and what will happen. We can also see that the poster says 'Inspired by true Events' which is normally stereotypical of a horror film as it is meant to draw the audience in as it makes them think what about it is true? This makes 'The Vow' seem more interesting to the audience as it makes them wonder what could make this Romance film be so different from the others.

Representation

The first thing that draws us into the poster is the main image of the couple. We can see that they have used easy to look at warm colours to make the poster look more inviting. Even though we can see more of the woman than the man, a focus of the image would be the man's muscular arm, showing that he is the stronger of the couple which is a stereotypical way to represent a couple in movies. The representation of the woman is also very positive as we can see her with shiny glowing skin and a slender body which is a positive way to represent a woman and draw in the woman audience.

Audience

We can see that in the tight medium shot framing of the image, the poster still allows the audience to see the shape of the woman's body, in which she has a stereotypically desirable woman's body being slim with glowing skin, this could be reflecting on the fact that the film makers think that the audience of the film is for women, as seeing this woman look flawless, it will make them want to see more. However, you'd think that if the film was meant to be targeting a female audience, they would have shown more of the male actor Channing Tatum who is a worldwide desirable man for woman, therefore showing more of him might have drawn the audience in more. However this could also mean that the film is also trying to draw the male audience in as well by showing a nice simple looking woman with nice curves, it might make the man want to watch the film more. I think that the age that the film is based around would be early 20s as mentioned before the poster says that it is "Inspired by true events" meaning that its going to be a realistic complicated relationship, meaning that younger audiences might not understand the situation easier.

Narrative

After watching the film I can see that the narrative is quite complex and distressing, being that the woman is involved in a car accident and forgets her memory of marrying her husband. However we can see from the poster that this shows no signs of negativity, this could be because the poster creators might not want to show this much depression in the poster as it might put people off seeing it. Also from the film being called 'The Vow' the audience already knows that the film is going to be about the marriage between the couple, however the audience will know that the film can't just be about a marriage and that there must be bumps and hitches along the way which will make it more interesting to watch and also draw the audience in.

Media Language

Obviously, as mentioned in previous points, we can clearly see that the main focus of the poster is the image of the couple. The tight framing and medium close up shot shows us that the couple are in some kind of relationship, presently marriage which reflects on the name of the film 'The Vow', with warm and inviting colours as to draw the audience in and make the film come across as easygoing as easily watchable. We can see that the background is slightly blurred which presents the fact that the poster's main focus is the couple in the foreground. In the blurred background we can just about make out the green shade of foliage, which could be representing that some of the film is shot in the park or some kind of nice environment, representing again that the film is happy and easygoing. The Mise-En-Scene of the image is mainly everyday clothing, however the man is wearing a darker colour whereas the woman is wearing a lighter colour, this could represent the difference of genders or the power in the relationship, or it could represent the narrative that the man is going through a dark period and the woman is going to be enlightened. The font that the poster uses is simple and neat, keeping in with the colour scheme of the overall poster.

Research and Planning: Film Name Ideas

Taking into consideration the topic of our film and the Genre it's difficult to come up with a name that will portray the Romance side of the film but also reflecting on the darker side of the film, however as the film has a darker nature we don't want the film name to suggest that the film will be depressing it might effect the audience's choice of watching the film. We also need to make sure that the film name will show that there will be an equilibrium and happy ending. The film name also should be short and snappy as to develop some kind of synergy around the film, which will help the audience remember it in their heads and tell their friends about it.

Here are some examples of Romance film names:
- The Vow
- The Notebook
- Pretty Woman
- Remember me
- Love Actually
- Valentines Day

I have noticed their seems to be a pattern of the title being two words, however I think that names like 'The Vow' are better than names like 'Valentines Day' as the word Valentines is quite long winded, and also might not appeal to some people as even though Valentines Day is a global holiday some people might get confused at what it is, including children. I also think that it sounds cheesy and predictable, we already know its a Romance you don't have to push it on your audience. However the Vow suggests different things, marriage vows? A promise of love? It leaves the audience wondering, which makes them remember, which makes them therefore go and see the film.

Research and Planning: Costume List

For our Romance film, the costumes will be very basic and everyday as to portray the nature of the film, as we are not doing anything like horror etc, we will not be needing any extreme makeup and things like fake blood etc.

Zac:
- School Uniform, as some of the scenes will be shot in a school like atmosphere
-Normal everyday clothes, typical teenager, jeans, t-shirt, trainers. Clothing should be high street trend, as Zac is meant to be a popular kind of guy clothes should be stereotypically good looking, nothing like tracksuits etc that gives the image of the English slang 'Chav'

Ramona:
- Also needs a School Uniform, as to compensate with the shots in the school.
- Clothes should be cute and quirky as to reflect her name and nature, things such as colourful bright summer dresses, and as the story develops and the mood of the trailer deteriorates, her costume should also reflect the sad mood, stereotypical moody teenager clothes, hoodies etc.

Alana:
- Very innocent clothing as she is meant to portray that of the 'little sister', clothes that reflect her younger age, patterns etc.
- School Uniform, should be the same as Ramona and Zac's.
- As the trailer darkens, clothes such as long sleeves and jackets to suggest a lack of confidence.

Research and Planning: Production Company Logo Research

Here are some successful logos from Production companies that we have found, by researching this it is giving us a good idea on what to look for when creating our own logo, and what kind of look we should go for.

Research and Planning: Production Company Name Research

Here is some ideas for a production company name that Emma and I came up with, as we are doing our film within the Romance Genre, we have decided to use words that will be associated with Romance so that the audience will know just from the title sequence that it is a Romance film. The word "Segreto" means 'Secret' in Italian, we translated one word to Italian because it is seen as a very romantic language, and we thought that the word sounded very nice in terms of being our company name. We used the technology: WordItOut.com to create this collage, as we are trying out all different technologies to help out with the production of our trailer.

Research and Planning: London Film Museum Trip

At the beginning of October, we went to London on a three day trip. While we were there we visited the British Film Museum which was amazing. I think being able to get up so close with all the famous props and costumes from some amazing movies including Batman and Star Wars, it inspired me to do the best that I can in the creation of my own trailer. I was a little disappointed that we were not able to see any Harry Potter props or costume as it is one of my favourites, but nevertheless the experience was still very good and helpful.

Research and Planning: Good Trailers vs. Bad Trailers - Good Examples

The first trailer that you can see here is for the film 'One Day' which features very well known actress Anne Hathaway. If that in itself doesn't sway you to watch the film, the trailer is a perfect portrayal of the Romance genre, using calming and uplifting piano music, choosing the perfect scenes in which represent the two character's relationship, and without using too much dialogue to make the trailer boring. I think some of the film is obvious, as in the part where the two end up together, however I think that as the trailer mentions that he is going to get married and shows Anne Hathaway's character with another man, the audience can see that there is a lot of different scenes and conflicts going on throughout the film which make it more appealing and seem more interesting, will he divorce his wife for her? Will they indeed end up together? Ending with the trailer saying at the end that Dexter 'made her happy' which puzzles the audience on why it would be in past tense, does something happen to her? Also as the film is based off of a book, it already ties in with the audience as the readers will want to see how the book is portrayed into a film, meaning that the synergy has already been created before the film was even made.

This next trailer is for the film 'Last Night' in which we see a well known cast. However straight from the beginning of the trailer we can see that there's going to be conflict through the film as there are four main characters, and four love interests. There are a couple who are married, however they both have another person in which they supposedly have feelings for. The music starts off quite dramatic and slow, using only a piano which suggests to the audience that the film is going to be quite serious and upsetting, which is normally what a Romance genre audience wants to see, which attracts them into the film more. Through the trailer we can see that a lot of the scenes are actually at night time with low key lighting, which also ties in with the title of the film 'Last Night' which also attracts the audience as we can see that the film makers are clever in how they do things and portrays to the audience that the film will be good and true.
